Spring Has Sprung

Spring has sprung, and with it, POLLEN and INSECTS. As the weather heats up, so will humidity and the need to remove green growth and insect nests from your home or office exterior. While there is no way to completely avoid “nature” from growing on your exterior, here are some steps that you can take to reduce its effects and keep these pests from making your home, their home.

  1. This is a great time of year to do a visual inspection of your home or office.  One of the easiest ways for insects to access your home is via plants, shrubs, or trees that border your house. When plants are too close to the house, insects use these limbs or branches to reach your siding, gutters, roof & other structures.  These plants can also prevent the sun from reaching the surface & restrict airflow to the surface, which keeps them damp. This moist, humid environment is an accelerant for mold and mildew to grow.
  2.  Do not plant things too close to the house. If your plants are too established or too large to move them away from the house, then cut them back as they grow so that they cannot reach the house exterior.
  3. Do not store things on or against the house exterior. We find a lot of potted plants, unused wood, and other materials just leaning against the house, which restricts the sun and air from moving freely around the home. As mentioned above, sun and air are essential to keeping surfaces dry and less likely to grow mold and mildew.
  4. And finally, you can spray the exterior of your home or office with insect repellent to keep creepy crawlers from setting up camp. Just be sure to read the warning labels to make sure that the product you choose is safe for pets and children. If you would like a recommendation for a pest control company that uses safe products, just give us a call at 919-435-7639 or email us at info@steampronc.com.
