Could your carpets be making you sick?

If carpets are not vacuumed regularly, they can hold up to four times their weight in dust and dirt! Additionally, there are over 200,000 types of bacteria per square inch of carpet. You can reduce these bacteria by removing your shoes before entering your home, but there are many other sources of contamination. Pets are one of the largest contributors to bacteria, but don’t go kicking out Fido just yet! Having your carpets professionally cleaned every 6-12 months is the only way to safely sanitize them, killing germs and bacteria, which could be making your family sick.
Although we might not normally associate carpet with improved indoor air quality, it does have a very positive effect. Gravity causes common household particles, such as dust, pollen, pet/insect dander, and dead skin cells to fall to the floor. Carpet traps particles, removing them from the breathing zone and reducing their circulation in the air. This is great news for allergy sufferers who are often affected by airborne allergens. By simply vacuuming on a regular basis, we can remove dust and allergens from the carpet and help keep them out of the air we breathe.
